The police arrested six persons, six days after a squabble over a cricket match resulted in the death of a man as well as four persons getting injured in Jarcha area of Greater Noida.

However, the police are yet to arrest the prime accused Mohammad Abbas, who shot 23-year-old Mohammad Rizwan dead at Kalonda village under the jurisdiction of Jarcha area in Dadri, Greater Noida.

“Based on a tip provided by informants, we arrested Raees Khan, Mohammad Zabid, Waqil Khan, Mohammad Arif, Umar and Naseem (surnames unknown) from their residences on Tuesday morning. All six accused belong to Kalonda village. We also recovered six countrymade pistols from the accused men, along with live ammunition,” KK Rana, station house officer, Jarcha police station, said.

However, the police are yet to arrest Abbas, who, according to them, had shot Rizwan in the head. Rizwan had died during treatment in a private hospital in Ghaziabad the next day.

The incident had taken place on the morning of August 29 at Kalonda village while a cricket match was being played. According to the police, a squabble during the match had resulted in both groups firing indiscriminately and pelting stones at each other. Heavy police presence was deployed in the village later to defuse tension.

“Rizwan was not involved in the clash or the cricket match. He was going to a medical store to buy medicines when a stray bullet fired by Abbas hit him in the head. Abbas had mistaken him as a member of the other group. Along with Rizwan, four others were also injured,” Rana said.

All six accused have been arrested under the Indian Penal Code sections 302, 307, 147, 148 and 149 for murder, attempt to murder, rioting, rioting with deadly weapon and unlawful assembly.

“We will soon arrest Abbas, as teams have been formed to trace him. He is presently on the run,” Rana added.
