A sports utility vehicle (SUV) overturned on the 4.8-kilometre elevated road near National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) office in Sector 24 on Thursday afternoon. The police recovered a liquor bottle from the vehicle after its occupants fled the spot.

Eyewitnesses said that the there were two occupants of the car, a man and a woman, both in their early 20s. The police said that the couple had a close shave. The vehicle, a Ford EcoSport, was moving towards Greater Noida West.

The police said the driver of the car had taken the ramp leading to the elevated road near NTPC’s engineering office. As the car reached the corridor, it collided with the railing and turned turtle. Eyewitnesses said that the duo came out of the vehicle and booked a cab, leaving behind the car.

According to the police, the SUV turned turtle because the driver was speeding and lost control of the vehicle while taking the ramp to the elevated road.

Umeed Singh Yadav, the station house officer of Sector 24 police station, said, “None of the occupants called us. We came to know of the incident when traffic snarls started taking place on the route. A team rushed to the spot and saw that a car had overturned.”

He said the incident had taken place around 2pm. The car was later removed from the spot and traffic started moving smoothly.

“We found the car was registered to a resident of Ghaziabad district. We are trying to trace its owner based on the address given to us by the transport authority. Food and a liquor bottle were recovered from inside the car,” said Singh.

The police said that the car was damaged in the incident and that the windows, roof and the bumper were smashed following the collision. One of the front tyres of the vehicle had also burst, which the police suspect caused the vehicle to overturn.
