Police officials investigating the attack on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Brijpal Teotia in Ghaziabad have primarily focused on searches and investigation within the state itself. They are especially looking at western UP where several gangs have access to automatic weapons like the AK-47 used in the attack on Teotia on August 11.
Police are questioning six persons apart from slain gangster Rakesh Hasanpuriya’s wife Sunita – a UP police constable posted at Baghpat. She was questioned as she is known to believe that Teotia and his close aide Inderpal Singh had tipped off the police leading to Hasanpuriya’s death in a police encounter in April 2005 at Ghaziabad.
Officials said that most of the suspects being questioned are connected with prime suspect Manoj – a resident of Mehrauli village in Ghaziabad. The police suspect the motive to be personal enmity with Manoj as a number of people related to both Manoj and Teotia have been killed in the past two decades. However, Teotia’s brother Vikas denied any enmity with anyone and claimed the attack was politically motivated as his brother was vying for a ticket in the upcoming state assembly polls.
“Hasanpuriya’s wife is being questioned about the incident. She has not been able to reveal much as of now, but we cannot immediately rule her out at present. Questioning is underway. So far, there have been no arrests and our searches are primarily confined to UP areas. We are still investigating personal rivalry with Manoj as the primary motive behind the crime,” said KS Emmanuel, senior superintendent of police, Ghaziabad.
Police sources said they have also picked up one person for questioning from Daurala in Meerut who is close to another suspect Shekhar, a repeat offender from Kavi Nagar police station in Ghaziabad and a friend of Manoj.
“We have come to know that Shekhar was previously nabbed in Punjab in connection with a case of arms supplies. He has links in Punjab through someone in Sahibabad,” a police source said.
Sources added that police are also looking for Sansar Singh, a relative of Manoj, and teams are investigating his suspected role in providing weapons for the attack.
However, police officials said both Manoj and Shekhar are yet to be picked up and a search for them is on. Officials are also yet to send the seized AK-47s, 9mm pistols and ammunition used in the attack for forensic examination. The serial numbers on the assault rifle were damaged before the weapon was used in the attack on Teotia at Rawli Road in Murad Nagar town of Ghaziabad.
