We must make India proud of us again

The nature of my country is changing, the fibre has changed. This is the India we have made

To love a motherland is no different from loving a parent(Sameer Sehgal/Hindustan Times)

With election results weeks away, I step back and look at my beloved country. Never have I seen such polarisation, such anger and such base thought, and as I hear people, read articles and watch television, I can’t help but ask, “India, what have we done to you?”

Seventy-two years ago, we peacefully made our colonisers leave. Seventy-two years ago, as our country was split, we saw unprecedented violence. Going forward from there, we chose to live life like those who lived, fought and died to give us freedom. Peacefully and inclusively.

But it seems to me, the nature of my country is changing, the fibre has changed. This is the India we have made.

Is there any going back? How do we make India proud of us again?

To love a motherland is no different from loving a parent. Familial love requires a particular devotion. Often, children let their parents down. Let’s not let India down. “No nation has ever become great unless it has overcome dangers and difficulties and has thereby strengthened its own inner fibre” — Katha Upanishad. Let’s overcome and make India proud of us, again.
