Ashish Kumar and Deepa Karmakar declared best gymnasts

Commonwealth and Asian Games medalist Ashish Kumar of Railways and Deepa Karmakar of Tripura were declared the best gymnasts in the men's and women's categories of the 51st senior Gymnastic Championship.

Commonwealth and Asian Games medalist Ashish Kumar of Railways and Deepa Karmakar of Tripura were declared the best gymnasts in the men's and women's categories of the 51st senior Gymnastic Championship.

Ashish dominated in all six disciplines and accumulated 85.30 points to grab the title for the fourth consecutive time. Another upcoming gymnast, Rakesh Patra, stood second with 89.90 points. Ashish Ranjan of Railways totalled 77.90 to grab the third spot.

In the women's section, Karmakar stood first with a tally of 51.10 points. Meenakshi of Puinjab (48.15) and Vandita Rawal of Maharashtra with 45.65 finished second and third respevtively.

The president of the India Gymnastic Federation, Jaspal Singh Kandhari, awarded Rs 11 lakh to Ashish Kumar.

"We have decided to have a prize money of Rs 19 lakh in the senior championship and that would perhaps attract more youngsters to the sport."
