Baishya is new IWF president; body to shell out RS 3 crore
Member of Parliament, BP Baishya, and chairman of the North-Eastern Commission of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), was unanimously elected president and Sahadev Yadav was elected secretary.
After the executive committee of the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) resigned last month, owing moral responsibility for the series of dope failures by lifters, fresh elections.
Member of Parliament, BP Baishya, and chairman of the North-Eastern Commission of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), was unanimously elected president and Sahadev Yadav was elected secretary.
“Indian weightlifting is in a bad shape and our priority will be to make it dope-free, for this we have to work at the grass-root level,” Baishya told HT.
IWF to pay Rs 3 crore
Though a final decision is still pending with the world body, but a source in the new body have confirmed that the IWF would escape with a fine instead of a ban.
According to a source, IWF will have pay $500,000 (Rs 2.3 crore) as fine and each of the six lifters who tested positive at the Pune national camp, has to shell out $ 5000 (Rs 23 lakh) each. “We will take help from Indian Government and IOA to raise the fine money,” an IWF official said.
