Nine Indians in world billiards pre-quarters

Former champion Pankaj Advani and veteran Alok Kumar led the charge as nine Indian cueists reached the pre-quarterfinals of the Point-format in the IBSF World Billiards Championship being held at Carlow, Ireland today.

Indian cueists reigned supreme at the green baize as Advani, Alok and Rupesh Shah streamrolled the opponents to toptheir respective groups in the tournament, which started on August 24 and will continue till September 1.Advani topped his Group C, winning all four matches, while Alok and Rupesh topped their respective groups.

India squash-ed
The Indian racqueters played their heart out but eventually ran out of steam, going down to former champions Australia in the quarterfinal of the World Team Squash Championship at Padewrborn, Germany.

Australia's top rung player David Palmer recovered from a game down to get the better of India's highest-ranked player Saurav Ghosal 7-11 11-8 11-4 11-5 in 51 minutes while Siddharth Suchde fought valiantly before succumbing to Cameron Pilley 9-11 8-11 4-11 in 50 minutes in the quarters played last night at an all new glasscourt. The tie between Stewart Boswell and Harinder Pal Sandhu was withdrawn.
