Sports ministry takes Geetika issue seriously

After Geetika Jakhar approached the sports ministry over the conduct of re-trials for the Olympic qualifying tournament in the 63kg weight category despite earlier trials held on April 19, the sports ministry has asked the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) for an explanation as to why they are conducting the re-trials when Geetika was declared the winner earlier. After Geetika Jakhar approached the sports ministry over the conduct of re-trials for the Olympic qualifying tournament in the 63kg weight category despite earlier trials held on April 19, the sports ministry has asked the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) for an explanation as to why they are conducting the re-trials when Geetika was declared the winner earlier.

“It is not clear as to why re-trials are being conducted in her (Geetika) case when she was declared the winner. As per the stated policy of the federation, the winners of the trials held on April 19 were to represent India at the Olympic qualifiers in Helsinki. This action of the federation does not appear to be in keeping with the principles of good governance and transparency,” stated the ministry letter sent to WFI secretary-general Raj Singh.

SAI has directed Geetika to not appear for the re-trials to be held in New Delhi on Monday.
