The contingent of 48 athletes will compete in 13 events including archery, athletics and boxing. Durga Das Boro, chairman, press and TV commission, Indian Olympic Association, will be the chef de mission.

The inaugural edition of the Games is being billed as an important testing ground to identify future talent and hone their skills, although athletes like tennis player Yuki Bhambri, who will be India’s flag bearer, already have international exposure.

“Some of the athletes come from humble backgrounds, so it will be a good test of character for them to compete in such a grand event,” said an IOA official.

Singapore won the bid to host the Games in 2008 after staving off Moscow’s challenge through a tally of postal votes.
