"Both Lovely Anand and Ranjeeta Ranjan - wives of jailed politicians Anand Mohan and Pappu Yadav respectively are leaders in their own rights," state unit Congress spokesman Prem Chandra Mishra told reporters in Patna.

Defending Lovely Anand, a former MP from Vaishali, Mishra said she could not be deemed as a person with criminal background owing to her presence at a gathering where a mob had lynched the then Gopalganj district Magistrate G.Krishnaiah at Muzaffarpur district in December 1994.

He hit back at Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi for his barb against Gandhi for allegedly seeking to woo the criminal elements to boost his party's electoral prospects by sharing the dias with the two at a public meeting at Saharsa on Saturday.

Mishra claimed that contrary to the presence of a large number of politicians with criminal background in NDA, Congress has kept such elements at bay.
