JD(U) goes for seat sharing with RJD in assembly bypolls

Ending days of speculation, the ruling Janata Dal (United) on Sunday decided to contest the coming state assembly byelections for 10 constituencies in association with non-BJP parties, including RJD, and authorised the party leadership to take a decision.

The state executive meeting of JD(U) decided to go for seat sharing with secular parties like RJD in the upcoming bypolls to defeat a resurgent BJP in the state.

In New Delhi, JD(U) president Sharad Yadav said JD(U) and RJD would contest the assembly bypolls together to take on BJP. Former chief minister Nitish Kumar underlined the need for an alliance with ‘like-minded’ parties and said Lalu Prasad’s RJD had helped JD(U) during a major crisis.

The association should continue in the upcoming byelections, he said. “We have decided to fight the bypolls together. The consolidation of secular forces under the JD(U)-RJD alliance will prove to be a litmus test for BJP,” said state JD(U) president Bashishtha Narayan Singh after the meeting which continued for more than three hours.
