“If Modiji once again becomes the prime minister, [Bihar] will witness more development,” said the chief minister.

Chief minister Nitish Kumar on Friday blended nationalism and economics in his election meeting, saying, “Under [Narendra] Modiji, India has acted strongly against terror and the government has undertaken the task of all-pervasive development.”

Nitish, who was addressing an election meeting at the Bhabua Hawai Adda ground under Sasaram constituency, also said, “Under Modiji, Bihar has prospered in all directions”, mentioning central government schemes such as Ujjwala Yojna and Ayushman Bharat, and he praised the Centre for giving Rs 50,000 crore for the construction of roads and bridges in the state. “If Modiji once again becomes the prime minister, [Bihar] will witness more development,” said the chief minister. Adding an international perspective, he said, “India’s act against terror has been acclaimed globally.”

At the meeting, the chief minister spoke of Bihar’s big step: the enforcement of total alcohol prohibition, and he thanked women for their initiative.

“Women have brought about a perceptible change by giving their total support to prohibition in Bihar,” he said. “They made the government think about the issue of alcoholism and the government acted as per their wishes. Today, we can say, ‘You were right,’” he added, pointing to a large number of women present in the rally audience.

The chief minister exhorted women to participate actively to ensure an emphatic win for all the National Democratic Alliance nominees in order to strengthen Modi at the Centre.

In a veiled attack at the Rashtriya Janata Dal, he said, “People have already sent the party, which indulged in looting public money, into exile. NDA has waged a war against backwardness and corruption and that’s why the opposition wants to dislodge us. NDA will not budge an inch from its development agenda.”

During the rally, Nitish took a dig at the Lalu-Rabri rule in Bihar without mentioning their names. “You are the best judges of my 13-year rule; compare it with that of the husband-wife rule of 15 years,” he said, asserting, “The age of the lantern (the RJD election symbol) is gone, as electricity has penetrated every house in Bihar.”

The BJP nominee in the Sasaram constituency, Chhedi Paswan, pitched his agenda by accusing the opposition Grand Alliance of giving tacit support to Pakistan. “If you vote for GA nominees and help them form a government, they will mortgage India to Pakistan,” he said.

The Sasaram LS seat is all set to witness a high-stakes contest, with Congress veteran and former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar taking on BJP’s sitting MP Chhedi Paswan. Sasaram is slated to go to poll on May 19.
