"I have sent my resignation letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi yesterday apprising her of the reasons for quitting the party," he told reporters in Patna. "It was a difficult decision to part with the Congress with which I have been associated for long and represented it in the legislative council for 30 years from Saran (graduate) constituency," Singh said.

The non consideration of the demand for special status to Bihar, despite its dire financial situation following carving out of Jharkhand was "an insult to the 9 crore people of the state", he said.

On whether he will be joining the ruling JD(U) as was being speculated, Singh said that he would take a decision about his political future after consulting his friends and supporters.
