Photos | NRC final list released: Over 19 lakh excluded, 3.1 crore included

The final National Register of Citizens (NRC) was released today. The list, that is intended to identify legal residents and weed out illegal immigrants from Assam, excluded over 19 lakh people from the list and included 3.11 crore people. Contrary to speculations and erroneous reports, the Centre and state government have already clarified those left out of final NRC won’t be declared foreigners. Those missing from the list could represent their case in front of the Foreign Tribunals to prove their citizenship.

An additional list released in June this year, had excluded 1,00,000 more taking the total tally to 4.1 million. While majority of those left out of the earlier lists had filed claims seeking inclusion in the final NRC, 380,000 of them didn’t. NRC authorities had gone through their claims one more time before releasing the final list. (PTI)

Security personnel stand guard outside the National Register of Citizens (NRC) Seva Kendra while people arrive to check their names on the final list in Guwahati. Security had been beefed up and 218 companies of central paramilitary forces deployed to maintain peace. There was no report of any untoward incident immediately after the final list was made public at 10 am. (ANI)
