BET Awards began with an act that wasn’t on the schedule — Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar performing Freedom, the anthemic track from Beyonce’s album Lemonade. It was an intense, thoroughly choreographed performance, replete with flying sparks and smoke and a stage that looked convincingly like it was made of molten lava. (Instagram)

During the awards, Hollywood actor Jamie Foxx, with his daughter Annalise, reflected on the passing of both Prince and Muhammad Ali. Regarding Ali, Foxx remembered the icon as someone who “stood up at at time when no one was standing up. It’s definitely more than just boxing, more than just entertainment, but someone who shaped all our lives.” (AP)
