Covid-19 vaccination drive for 15-18 age group begins today

Thousands of children, many accompanied by parents, queued up outside schools, medical centres and special health camps from early on Monday to secure their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

India kickstarted the vaccination drive for children aged 15 to 18 against the coronavirus from Monday. The registration process began on January 1 this year. On December 25, 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given his nod to vaccinate children in this age group during his address to the nation. He also mentioned that the precautionary third dose for the healthcare workers, frontline workers, and citizens above 60 years with severe health conditions will commence from January 10, 2022. Authorities in Gujarat, which is Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state, are hoping to give the first dose to 3.6 million children this week. "We have the capacity and we have the vaccines to cover most of the children. We appeal to parents to cooperate and ensure the children are vaccinated at the earliest," said Jai Prakash Shivahare, health commissioner in Gujarat state. (AFP)
