IMD issues heatwave red alert across North India for next 5 days

To minimise the impact of the heat wave and prevent serious ailments, doctors have advised people against going outdoors to the extent possible.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday predicted heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh, issuing a 'red alert' for these states over the next five days.

"Temperatures are currently above normal across North West India and we had issued a red alert for the region over the past 2-3 days. With regard to a state-wise forecast, we have issued a red alert in Rajasthan for the next five days. The maximum temperature is likely to inch further up from 45°C and settle at 47°C," Senior IMD scientist Naresh Kumar said. (AFP)

"In Punjab and Haryana, maximum temperatures have registered a marginal drop due to a prevailing western disturbance but they will increase gradually hereafter by 2 to 3 degrees. we have already issued a 'red alert' for these two states. In neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, we have issued a red alert for the next five days and an orange alert for northern parts of Madhya Pradesh," Kumar added. (AFP)

The weather department has suggested drinking sufficient water and using ORS or homemade drinks such as lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water and buttermilk to stay hydrated. (AFP)

The threshold for a heatwave is met when the maximum temperature of a weather station reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius in the plains, 37 degrees in the coastal areas, and 30 degrees in the hilly regions, and the departure from normal is at least 4.5 notches. (ANI)
