Photos: 2021, an unforgettable year remembered in images

A year of loss, pain, oxygen shortage, of another lockdown and opening up in phases. A year of the indomitable spirit of health care workers, frontline workers and Olympics medalists. A year also of farmers, protests, and three repealed laws; of state elections; and a military tragedy that shocked the country. As the Covid-19 national vaccination programme was rolled out, with the first shot administered in Delhi, long lines snaked outside vaccination centres as people queued up to get their first dose. There was a glimmer of hope, and a sight of the old normal. But the brutal wave of Covid-19 saw hospitals short of beds, patients short of oxygen, and families with little space to lay their loved ones to rest. As the year ends, we look at some of the images that defined this year, through the lens of HT photographers.
