Photos: Trump and Biden face off in first US presidential debate
On September 29, US President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden battled fiercely during their first 2020 presidential campaign debate. The debate was marked by personal insults and Trump's repeated interruptions. While Biden was critical of Trump's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, the economy and racial injustice in the United States, Trump blamed the racial injustice on the left wing and alleged that ballots were being manipulated. As of September 29 evening, 1.4 million Americans already had cast early ballots and Biden has held a consistent lead over Trump in national opinion polls.

On September 27, The New York Times had reported that Trump paid just $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017 and none in 10 of the previous 15 years. (Julio Cortez / AP)

Wallace never established control of the debate, with Trump repeatedly ignoring his calls to let Biden speak. “I think that the country would be better served if we allowed both people to speak with fewer interruptions. I’m appealing to you, sir, to do that,” Wallace said. (Olivier Douliery via AP)

For Trump, the debate represented one of the few remaining chances to change the trajectory of a race that most opinion polls show him losing, as the majority of Americans disapprove of his handling of both the coronavirus pandemic and protests over racial injustice.
