19-year-old arrested for killing father in Pune

Accused in his confessional statement had stated that his father was abusive and a drunkard.

A 19-year-old, identified as Ganpat alias Sonya Bapu Shendge, was arrested for killing his father. Ganpat, in his confessional statement had stated that his father was abusive and a drunkard. Ganpat is a resident of Tukainagar area of Vadgaon Budruk.

The body of Bapu Ashok Shendge, 40, was found in a canal in Hadapsar on August 12. The limbs of the body were tied together with a jute rope before throwing it in the water, prompting the Hadapsar police to file a case under Sections 302 (murder) and 201 (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against unidentified accused.

Ganpat was arrested from Shrirampur in Ahmednagar on Friday and was handed over to the Pune police. Senior police inspector Sardar Patil of the Sinhagad road police station is investigating the case.

The Shrirampur city police arrested Ganpat and upon being questioned, he confessed to having strangled his father with the help of a kitchen rolling pin before beating up his father. He told the police that he did so after being fed up of his father’s drinking habit and behaviour, according to the police.

He also told the police that two of his friends assisted him in the crime, helped him tie the body with a jute rope and throw it in the canal in order to destroy evidence.The police are on the lookout for the other two involved in the case. Section 34 (common intention) of the IPC was added to the original case registered at the Hadapsar police station and later transferred to the Sinhagad road police station.
