After lighting up Chandar village, Pune’s science and tech park set to electrify 16 villages in Velhe
The project comes after the organisation’s successful transformation of Chandar village, Velhe, within a period of 15 days. Once, reeling in poverty and lack of basic facilities like electricity and clean drinking water, the village, has been powered with electricity with the help of Maharashtra state electricity distribution company limited (MSEDCL), in addition to installation of solar lamps, solar water pumps and a water storage tank, among others.
A team of experts from the science and technology park at the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) campus, plan to electrify 16 villages of the Velhe taluka, located around 50 kilometres from Pune.

Similar work is being planned in 16 more villages of the taluka, of which five were surveyed on May 22 by the team.
“We got good support for the Chandar project after the matter was put forth in the public domain. Many government officials and organisations were interested to change the scenario, but the work does not end there, it just begins there. The government’s support would really expedite the work on a larger scale, but memory, in these matters in short-lived. We have not been getting much help from them, despite the preliminary success,” said Rajendra Jagdale, director general of science and technology park.
Further, in the first week of June, 500 households which are not connected to the grid near Bhimashankar wildlife sanctuary, will be illuminated with solar home lighting work. Each family will be given three solar lamps and one mobile charging point. A total of 238 households had already benefited from the work last year in June.
“You can imagine that if one taluka has 16 villages off the grid, there could be hundreds across the state. And, in today’s world when we are trying to achieve such progressive technological achievements in the urban areas, such neglect for the rural is very shameful and unfair. We are trying to mobilise more people, look for crowd sourcing methods to illuminate these areas. If we can transform four hamlets in Chandar in 15 days, then with the government’s support, it is possible to do the same across the whole of the western ghats in a year,” he added. The work in these 16 villages, is expected to be completed in the next six months.
