Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh said that his party’s current situation is grim compared to that of 2004 when UPA had defeated NDA to form the government at the Centre.

Commenting on the completion of three years of Narendra Modi government, Ramesh said in Pune on Friday that the Congress party of today is much weaker than that of 2004 and is the reason for losing the Lok Sabha and other elections.

“There are many reasons as to why we have not been able to emerge as a strong opposition party,” Ramesh said, adding that the Congress’ current opponents were different from those of 2004.

“Our opponents today have more money. They don’t follow any standard. They are ruthless,” said the former environment minister, adding that the Congress party has not been able to highlight the failures of Narendra Modi government.

“They are far better than us in marketing, branding and repackaging We are far behind in marketing our achievements,” Ramesh said.

“Back in 2004, we were in power in many states and currently we are not. This has reflected in our strength in the Rajya Sabha,” the Rajya Sabha MP said.

Ramesh said that the current leadership of BJP are so ruthless that it makes him want to praise LK Advani.“I never thought I will one day praise Advani. But he looks far more dignified in his approach compared to that of the current leadership.”
