The central railway Pune division (CPRD) will be using drone technology to map the areas prone to landslides in a 20 kilometre stretch in the Kandala ghat section between Pune and Mumbai railway track.
“In the entire stretch of the Khandala Ghat, especially near the monkey hill area, there are spots prone to landslides especially during the rainy season. This leads to delay in the train schedule. At times, the tracks are completely blocked,” said a senior railway official from the Pune Divisional Railway Manager’s office, on the condition of anonymity.
The official revealed that it is for these reason that the department has decided to use the drone technology to map critical areas.
“After the complete mapping a made and a report is prepared, we will start our work on these critical locations. Required steps will be taken to avoid landslides,” the official said.
The work of mapping via drones has been given to a private agency, said the official.
Meanwhile, railway authorities are also working on installing nets at locations prone to landslides in that section.
