Hadapsar police arrest man for extortion in the name of dahi handi contribution
The police are on the lookout for others who were with him when they threatened a local shop owner with dire consequences if he refused to contribute money to their organisation for dahi handi celebrations. They threatened to kill him if he did not give ₹2,000 as contribution. The complainant contributed ₹1,000 out of fear for his life, he told the police.
One man was arrested and a case of extortion was registered at the Hadapsar police station on Sunday evening for threatening local business owners to contribute for dahi handi celebrations. The arrested man was identified as Vishal Appa Mirekar, a resident of Gadital area of Hadapsar.
"We arrested him on Sunday evening. He will be produced in the court on Monday morning," said senior police inspector Sunil Tambe of the Hadpasar police station.

Recently appointed in charge of Hadapsar police station, Tambe, urged local business owners to approach the police if people collecting funds for Ganesh festival or dahi handi force them to give money. The police were on a drive to interact with business owners on the issue when the complainant told them about the incident at his shop near Bantar School in Gadital area.
Subsequently, a case under Sections 386 (extortion) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal COde (IPC) was registered against Mirekar at Hadapsar police station.
