No Fani impact on Indian monsoon, Maharashtra may face heatwave again: IMD

It’s a huge gap between the monsoon and Fani, so it is impossible for there to be any impact of this deadly cyclone on the monsoon system

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has clarified that cyclonic storm Fani will have no impact on the Indian monsoon system.

Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather, IMD, Pune, said,“There is no harmful impact of Fani cyclone on the Indian monsoon system. As we know, there is at least a one-anda-half month period before the arrival of the monsoon, so it is impossible for there to be any impact of this deadly cyclone on the monsoon system.”

Ranjan Kelkar, former director general of the IMD, said,“Yes, there were discussions about the impact of Fani on the monsoon, but such deadly cyclones during April and May are meteorological phenomenon occurring year after year.It’s a huge gap between the monsoon and Fani, so there is no need to worry.”

The extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani has made landfall on the Odisha coast on Friday morning. The current path of the cyclone takes it across West Bengal on Friday and Saturday. The forecast suggests that West Bengal will be severely affected due to the cyclone.

Heatwave in Maharashtra

India Meteorological Department (IMD) Pune has forecast heatwave conditions across isolated pockets of Maharashtra from May 6 onwards.

“There is chance of heatwave over isolated pockets of north Maharashtra, central Maharashtra and Marathwada on May 6, 7 and 8 with scattered heatwave in some parts. There is also a chance of heatwave in Vidharbha and adjoining parts of the state in the next 48 hours,” said Anupam Kashyapi, head, weather, IMD.

Presence of north westerly winds is responsible for further rise in temperature, Kashyapi said.

On Friday, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 35 degrees Celsius. The highest recorded temperature on Friday was at Bramhapuri (45 degrees Celsius), while Parbhani, Jalgaon, Solapur, Nanded and Beed recorded temperatures between 44.2 and 44.9 degrees Celsius.

IMD informed that heatwave will lessen post May 9, but one or two strong spells of heatwave are expected during May, due to which chances of pre-monsoon showers have been forecast as well.
