PCMC Budget 2018-19: Corporation splashes the cash on development works this year

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), which had faced criticism over its tender allocation process in the city, has marginally increased the budgetary provision for development projects this year. According to the budget that was announced on Thursday, the PCMC will spend Rs 171 crore more than its allocated sum in the 2017-18 budget on development works such as road widening, subways and grade separators.
PCMC commissioner Shravan Hardikar, who tabled the Rs 5,235.23-crore budget, announced an allocation of Rs 1,195 crore for various development works in the city. The civic body has made a provision of Rs 6.5 crore for the Pimple Saudagar underpass and plans to widen the section of the Pune-Nashik highway that runs between Panjrapole chowk and Alandi at a cost of Rs 20 crore, with an outlay of Rs 10 crore. Along with this, the civic body has made a Rs 16-crore budgetary allocation for the High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) from Kokane chowk to Kalewadi Phata, which will cover a distance of 30 km.
The ambitious Metro project connecting Pimpri to Swargate also received a budgetary allocation of Rs 50 crore. As far as the Metro extension till Nigdi is concerned,the commissioner assured that a sufficient amount will be allocated after the approval of the detailed project report
The civic body also plans to construct a grade separator from Kaspate Wasti (Wakad) to Pimpri for better connectivity and has made a budgetary provision of Rs 1.12 crore for the project.
Continuing its focus on development of infrastructure in the city, the PCMC has allocated Rs 12 crore for the construction of a road between Shakti-Bhakti chowk and Mukai chowk.
Municipal commissioner Shravan Hardikar, while presenting the budget, said, “As many as 100 suggestions by the residents of various wards have been included in budget this year.”
The PCMC has also made a provision of Rs 140 crore for land for various developmental projects in the city.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, PCMC has completed five affordable home projects till date. According to Hardikar, PCMC received the sanction for their Akurdi project on Wednesday and has subsequently made a budgetary provision of Rs 92.45 crore for the construction of new affordable homes in Akurdi.
Standing committee chief Seema Salve was also in favour of the budget. “For the first time, this year, the commissioner had kept us in the loop while preparing the budget. We are happy with the budgetary allocations,” she said.
Swachh Bharat Mission
Further, the PCMC has allocated Rs 28 crore for the Swachh Bharat Mission, which is touted to be the most important project to improve cleanliness in the city. Previously, under the scheme, PCMC had built 9,000 individual toilets till date. PCMC already has the ‘Open Defecation Free’ (ODF) grade and now, according to commissioner, the Rs 28 crore budgetary allocation will help them get the ‘ODF +’ grade.
Last year, PCMC had secured its place in the Smart City mission of the central government. Till date, PCMC has completed three detailed project reports and the commissioner has made a budgetary allocation of Rs 100 crore for the Smart City mission this year.
To develop drainage connectivity in the city, the PCMC has proposed a sum of Rs 59.45 crore under the AMRUT mission. The allocation will help in the construction of a new sewage system and the construction of three new sewage treatment plants in the city.
Gender Budget and PMPML
To improve the PMPML bus service in the city, the civic body has allocated Rs 164.56 crore. PCMC has also allocated Rs 33 crore for the ‘Gender Budget’, which aims at implementing various schemes for the welfare of women.
