The series of workshops, which are aimed at preparing participants for their respective roles in the final performance, are also aimed at sensitising children to challenging issues that they confront every day, such as the need for peace, respect for nature, right to food and shelter, equality, truth, gender equality, absence of bullying and the need for children to be given the opportunity for artistic self-expression.

The play is called ‘the dream that changed the world’. The play has been written by award-winning playwright Randhir Khare, who will also be directing it with the support of an experienced team of young professionals. Throughout the month and on weekends in June, the play will be rehearsed at Gyaan Adab in Kalyaninagar through specially designed and facilitated workshops. On June 30, the play will be presented on stage to audiences in Pune at a public performance.

Some of the important aspects of the workshop series are spoken English language enrichment, enhancement of self-confidence, strengthening group dynamics and collective decision making. Participants will learn the various aspects of dramatic performance such as voice modulation, voice and body expression, dialogue/monologue delivery, dramatic space usage and lots more. A significant takeaway after the workshops and final dramatic presentation is the ‘creative quotient report’. Through the entire process of the workshop series, each participant will be professionally tracked and a special report will be submitted to the family, indicating aspects of the specific potential of the participant so that they can become aware of the creative gifts their child has, with advice of how to encourage and nourish the same.

Randhir Khare, director, Gyaan Adab, said, “Theatre offers powerful life-changing possibilities for children and young people. This experience aims to break away from the standard practice of only ‘teaching children how to act’ , ‘speak well’ or ‘perform in front of an audience’. It aims at providing children and young people the unique opportunity to become who they truly are in a creative and meaningful way; by enjoying the fun of the experience. We have been trying to encourage schools to give theatre a centre stage in school life and use it to its maximum potential so that it becomes an exciting way for help children to learn, be confident and care about the world they live in.

“In an earlier series of workshops called The Fairytale Project, we encouraged children to explore their favourite fairytale characters and stories and recreate the stories in their own way, presenting them through various creative forms on stage. We followed that workshop series with another on acting/performance arts. This series is radically different as it is the preparation for a full-scale production, learning of dramatic performance skills as well as a purposeful and focused creative quotient report.”
