Police had earlier carried out a major drive against beggars in the area. However, what was surprising was that beggars had obtained bail by paying 5,000 cash in the court. Senior police inspector Milind Gaikwad said that the drive is aimed at reducing the public nuisance of beggars in the area.

However, a section of residents said that police must focus more on better policing, helping senior citizens by visiting them regularly, controlling crime and looking out for terrorists and anti social elements.

Besides, flushing out illicit liquor and gambling dens must be given priority over beggars, they said.
