Saurabh Igave wrestles to bronze at Asian cadet championship

In all, India has won two gold medals, three silver and 11 bronze medals at this tournament. 

PUNE Seventeen-year-old Saurabh Igave, a wrestler from Solapur, Maharashtra, has won the bronze medal at the Asian cadet wrestling championship at Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on Sunday.

Igave, son of famous wrestler Madhukar Igave and a cadet national gold medallist in 2016, in the 48kg weight category lost to local Usbek wrestler Umidjon Jalolov 0-11 in the quarterfinals.

However, in the repechage round, Igave defeated Iran’s Mojtaba Rajabali Soltanzadeh, 8-6, in a close contest. 

In the bout for the bronze medal, Igave defeated Mongolia’s Munkh Erdene Batkhuyag, 12-6, quite comfortably. 

Earlier, India’s Ravinder Singh clinched gold in the freestyle 60kg category. He defeated Mukhtaruly Iassaul of Kazakhstan 8-1 in the final. This is the second gold for India in the tournament, with Anshu Tomar having clinched the yellow metal in the women’s 61kg category on Saturday. 

In the 110kg category, India’s Anirudh Kumar won silver, losing 0-10 to Zare Amir Hossein Abbas of Iran in the final. Parvinder (55kg) and Monu Dahiya (92kg) earned bronze for India in their respective categories.

In all, India has won two gold medals, three silver and 11 bronze medals at this tournament. 

Maharashtra wrestling coach Ravneer Singh Rahal, who has been working with state wrestling association since 2009, is coach of the cadet team for this championship. Rahal said, “Wrestlers performed as per their expectations. Anirudh Kumar and Pravinder have already qualified for the Youth Olympics to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina in October this year. We have high hopes for them.”
