A footpath dweller was killed after being hit by a speeding city bus early on Thursday morning. The driver of the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus has been detained by the city police.
While the woman is unidentified, the driver has been identified as Balasaheb Sadashiv Jagtap, 40, a resident of Tadiwala road.
The woman's body was taken to Sassoon General hospital, located metres away from the spot. Jagtap was taken to the Bund garden police station and then handed over to the PMPML authorities.
"The bus was coming from Sadhu Vaswani chowk and taking a turn towards Pune station, close to Sassoon hospital’s gate when the woman was crossing the road. We have asked him to come to the police station tomorrow as we were busy with the case formalities today," said police sub inspector (PSI) SG Patil, Bund garden police station, who is investigating the case.
A case under Section 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 304(a) (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 184, 119/177 of Motor Vehicle Act has been registered.
The accident happened a few hundred metres from the same spot where a retired man was killed after being hit by a speeding ambulance. The deceased in that case was Ajit Rane, 59, who had retired from a private automobile company.
