Unable to pay loans, Solapur farmer commits suicide

Another farmer succumbed to agrarian crisis in Solapur district of Maharashtra on Wednesday night. Uneasiness prevailed in the small village of Vit in the district after Dhanaji Chandrakant Jadhav (45), a farmer, committed suicide on Wednesday night. He was reportedly depressed as he was unable to repay his loans.
Villagers claimed that Dhanaji had taken loans from banks and private money lenders and was unable to repay them. He hung himself from the tree and ended his life.
The deceased farmer also left a suicide note in his pocket in which he said that his body should not be cremated until Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis meets his family. However, police officials maintain that they are verifying the authenticity of the note found in Jadhav’s pocket.
Jadhav was active in the ongoing farmers agitation in the state. He is survived by his parents, wife and two sons. His body has been taken to the government hospital for postmortem.
Police force has been deployed in sensitive areas in Karmala Tehsil of Solapur district on the backdrop of farmers agitation.
