Jail superintendent Ashish Kapoor said: “Two unidentified persons, who were wearing black jackets, threw a packet inside the jail from area between tower no. 5 and 6. The packet contained six mobile phones, two knives, cigarette packs, two mobile phone chargers and data cables.”

Six more mobile phones were recovered from five jail inmates and five were found abandoned on the jail premises, said Kapoor.

He said cellphones were recovered from inmates Amarjit Singh, Sajan, Manjinder Singh, Jaspreet Singh and Nishan Singh. They have been booked under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code, 25/54/59 of the Arms Act, and 42, 52 of the Prison Act.

Kapoor said efforts were on to stop smuggling of mobile phones into the jail. “We have stepped up security and checking on the jail premises. Guards are keeping an eye on the activities of inmates and anyone visiting the jail is frisked.”
