For the 3,000 Class-11 seats at six Meritorious Schools in Punjab, 2,925 students have registered online as candidates in the past three days, a much better response from last year when almost 700 seats were left vacant.
The Society for Promotion of Quality Education for Poor and Meritorious Students started online registration on June 1 in all 22 districts, and it will close the process at 5pm on June 15. This year, 8,415 students in the state have above 80% score in the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) Class-10 examinations conducted in March.
"This year, we'll hold the first online counselling in every district for these seats," said Meritorious Schools project director major general KAS Bhullar (retd), adding: "This will start after June 15 and we'll keep putting up the dates on the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) website. This year, the response from the students is better and we expect the competition to be tough."
The Class-11 academic session at the schools will open in July, as counselling will go on until June 25. When asked if the department would give textbooks and uniform to students, he replied: "No, we will tell them during counselling to buy these on their own, and we'll put the cost into their bank accounts. We are recruiting teachers, wardens and principals, and going to advertise these posts on June 7."
