Deputy commissioner Ravi Bhagat supervised the removal of encroachments on Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Punjab Mandi Board maintains these roads, which had narrowed due to encroachments," the DC told media. In an earlier meeting, he had expressed dissatisfaction over the work, and hence took over supervision in his own hands.

The roads cleared of encroachments included Bargari-Sahoke, Gondara-Burj Jawahar Singh Wala, Matta-Kasam Bhatti, Behbal Khurad-Gurusar, and Golewala-Kabalwala link roads. The administration did not encounter any opposition, and it was able to install pillars along the stretches to check future encroachment.

Many farmers who own land adjoining the link roads continue to cut the edges of these roads to remove weeds and bushes before sowing the next crop. The constant narrowing of roads has increased the number of accidents.
