In a speedy trial, within 15 days of the police presenting the challan, the court of additional sessions judge Baljinder Kaur Sidhu on Saturday awarded 10-year imprisonment and Rs 10,000 in fine each to the seven gangrape accused.
The convicts had gangraped a 29-year-old married woman of Ghukla village under Kahnuwan police station in Gurdaspur district on January 11 night.
The convicts are Daler Singh of Bhittewal village, Ravi of Sahaipur village, Jaswinder Singh and Jagpreet Singh, both residents of Ladhupur village, Satwant Singh of Jagowal Bangar village, Gora of Ghorewah village and Sarabjit Singh of Chib village.
The victim had boarded a private minibus from her parental village Jagatpur in Pathankot district for her house at Ghukla village, 40km away, on January 11. When the bus arrived at her destination, driver Daler Singh and conductor Ravi did not stop the bus; instead, they took her to Gurdaspur, another distance of 24 km.
The driver and the conductor took her on a motorcycle to an unidentified place where five of their friends also joined them. From there she was taken to a house where all seven gangraped her.
The victim told the police that Daler Singh dropped her near her house at Ghukla village the next morning from where she walked to Kahnuwan police station to report the crime. On the statement of the victim, the police got her medically examined, which confirmed the rape.
The police registered a case against all seven accused under section 376 of the IPC. The police swung into action immediately and managed to arrest six of the accused within hours while the seventh accused was arrested a day later.
