Addressing a press conference, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Mandeep Singh Sidhu said that the accused, identified as Raj Kumar alias Nagpal, of Sunam, is the main supplier of Chinese strings in the district.

The accused used to buy the strings from Delhi for Rs 300 per roll and would sell it here for Rs 800 per roll or more, said the cops. “Raj and the customers used a secret code Kamakhya Dena,” said the SSP.

“On Monday, a man was critically injured with this strings on Barnala Road overbridge. He is out of danger now, But acting on the incident, our police team nabbed Raj Kumar, who was on his way to Sangrur from Sunam to supply the strings here,” the SSP added.

Sidhu said that this is the first time in the state that a string supplier has been booked under Section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) and 120 (conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

“We don’t want to book children for using Chinese strings. But it is the responsibility of their parent to stop them. We will now book parents of children found using these banned strings,” he said.
