The All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) has joined the ongoing signature campaign as part of a petition to the United States government to secure the release of Jagtar Singh Hawara, who was recently appointed the Akal Takht jathedar by the Sarbat Khalsa. Hawara is serving a death sentence for assassinating the then Punjab chief minister, Beant Singh.

AISSF national president Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad said Hawara, who is presently incarcerated in Tihar Jail, Delhi, was unanimously elected to lead 30-million-strong Sikh community by the November 10 Sarbat Khalsa backed by radical Sikh groups and attended by thousands of community members. “To elicit a response from the Obama administration, the White House petition must reach 1 lakh signatures by December 10,”he said.

“The petition to the Obama administration was launched by the US-based human rights group ‘Sikhs for Justice’ (SFJ) almost immediately after the Sarbat Khalsa named Hawara the head of Akal Takht,”said Peer Mohammad.

The SFJ has announced that it will submit to the administrations of the US, Canada and European Union a dossier of alleged grave violations of rights of and continuous threats to the Sikhs of Punjab for any dissent with the ruling class.
