Congress MP from Gurdaspur, Partap Singh Bajwa, on Monday demanded a time-bound inquiry by a sitting high court judge into police firing in Gurdaspur on March 29.
Talking to media after expressing sympathies with the family of deceased youth Jaspal Singh at Chorh Sidhwan village, 7km from here, he said that it was quite shocking that police fired at the youths who had done no harm to anyone.
He claimed that as per the law, police cannot open fire till the opposite side starts firing. He assured of all help in getting justice for the family which lost their only son in police action.
Bajwa appealed to the public to maintain calm and cooperate with authorities in restoring peace.
"I am aghast over the audacious, irresponsible and inhumane act of police in firing on unarmed citizens in Gurdaspur. Police and district administration have been found lacking in preparations once again. It seems that this government values life very cheap, which is why the merciless police action and firing took place. The government must act against the errant officers and spare no one howsoever high he might be," the Congress leader said.
