Harpreet Singh, 32, son of the owner of Shri Gurudev Photography, committed suicide after jumping from the roof of his shop’s building in Sector 17 in Chandigarh on Saturday evening.

Harpreet was rushed to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), where he was declared brought dead. He was a resident of Sector 10.

Harpreet was in the news in February this year when he was kidnapped in his Mercedes car after he left a gym in Sector 9. The kidnappers had demanded Rs 2 crore but later dropped him outside Elante Mall after his cousin paid them Rs 3 lakh ransom. They had later abandoned the car at some distance and fled.

The Sector-17 building’s caretaker, Prem, in his statement, told the police that Harpreet had called him and asked for the keys to the rooftop.

Station house officer (SHO) inspector Maninder Singh said: “Harpreet had told the caretaker not to come up to the roof till he called him.”

The SHO said no suicide note was found from the spot, but foul play has been ruled out.

“We have recovered two phones from the rooftop and will be checking them. The postmortem will be conducted on Sunday,” he said.

Harpreet is survived by his wife, parents and a younger brother. At present, he was working with his father.

Sources said Harpreet was under stress for the past few days. The family is in shock, said police, and their statements will be recorded on Sunday.
