The Chandigarh police on Wednesday sent a head constable posted in the crime branch to the police lines after an internal probe by senior officials reportedly found him shielding a woman drug peddler.

Investigating officials said the decision was taken by senior officials of the crime branch after call records of head constable Durjan Singh nailed him. It was found that he was in touch with the drug peddler — Nirmala, alias Nimmo, 40, of Dadumajra.

Nimmo was arrested by the Maloya police on July 24 for allegedly selling habit-forming drugs and injections. Cops had claimed to have recovered Rs 8 lakh contraband from her.

An official privy to the matter said: “Durjan Singh was in regular touch with Nimmo. Preliminary probe revealed that he had taken temporary accommodation near her house and they were meeting there frequently.”

The cop is married and has kids. Nimmo, too, is married.

Durjan has completed more than 30 years of service with the Chandigarh police. Meanwhile, there are seven cases registered against Nimmo in the tricity.

Durjan would shield Nimmo whenever she found herself in trouble with the police, said the official. To ascertain that to what extent Durjan was involved with Nimmo, a departmental inquiry will be ordered, pending which the cop will be suspended, he said.

Nimmo used to roam around Sector 38 West and its adjoining areas in search of customers. Maloya police had arrested her from near the petrol pump in Sector 38 on July 24.

On searching her two-wheeler, they recovered 200gm heroin and 15 vials of opioids buprenorphine and pheniramine maleate each.
