Vigilance Bureau officials said civil surgeon Dr Jai Singh was nabbed red-handed from his office by a flying squad team from Patiala, led by DSP KD Sharma, when he was accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 from complainant Ajmer Singh, president of sweet shop owners association.

The civil surgeon has been arrested under sections 7, 13 (2) of the prevention of corruption Act and the FIR has been lodged at VB police station, Patiala.

The complaint informed the bureau that the accused had been demanding Rs 1 lakh every month from all sweets shop owners by threatening to make surprise checks at their shops. An FIR has been registered against Dr Jai Singh.

However, Dr Jai Singh denied the charges and alleged false implication.

Dr Jai Singh was appointed Fatehgarh Sahib civil surgeon in the first week of July after Dr Gurmail Singh Chahal retired. Before joining at Fatehgarh Sahib, he was posted as district health officer at SAS Nagar.
