Annoyed at the alleged snatching of certificates from the five winning Congress candidates at Kaliye Wala village in this district on Wednesday night, the Congress workers staged a protest outside the deputy commissioner's office here on Thursday.
Led by former Congress MLA Vijay Sathi and youth Congress leader Manjeet Singh Mann, villagers staged a protest outside the DC office at around 11am and raised slogans against the Punjab Police and the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP alliance.
While levelling the allegations, Sathi alleged, "The presiding officer and other election staff had declared the results after conducting the counting and the staff distributed certificates to elected panches Jagdev Singh, Manjeet Singh, Gurmeet Kaur, Jora Singh and Balwant Singh, all belonging to the Congress, but police personnel headed by head constable Gora Singh snatched the certificates, and fresh certificates were issued to the losing candidates after making alteration in the record."
Sathi alleged that a SAD MLA had directed the policemen to snatch the certificates, which was a murder of democracy.
Addressing the gathering, block samiti member Kulveer Singh alleged that the police personnel also threatened the Congress workers of cane charge in case they protested, on Wednesday night. "The officials are harassing the innocent at the behest of the ruling party leaders but Congress workers would not tolerate it," he added.
Additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Amit Kumar visited the dharna site and requested the protesters to end the stir. The ADC asked the villagers to file their complaint with the election commission and assured them action.
SSP Surjeet Singh Grewal said, "No policeman snatched the certificates. It is just an election gimmick. My officers have investigated the matter and no such incident took place."
