The Delhi resident who had bought a newborn on Facebook is finally in police net. He was arrested on Monday from the courts complex in Ludhiana, where he had gone to seek anticipatory bail.
The police produced the accused, Amit Kumar (40) of Rajinder Nagar, Delhi, in court, which remanded him in one-day police custody.
Amit, a school van driver who also runs a mobile repair shop, has been married for the past 10 years, but has no children.
The four accused who were allegedly involved in working out the deal, including Feroze Khan, grandfather of the newborn, his accomplice Irfan, Gurpreet Singh, an assistant at Satyam Hospital on the Shingar Cinema road, and a nurse, Sunita Kumari of Manjit Nagar on the Tibba road, were arrested on April 23, two days after the police recovered the baby from Sri Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi. Amit, however, managed to escape. He had admitted the infant to hospital to treat him for jaundice.
ACP (east) Satish Malhotra said the police were aware of Amit's court visit. Amit confessed to the police that he had developed friendship with Gurpreet over Facebook and told him that he wanted to adopt a child. After a few days, Gurpreet told Amit that he had arranged a newborn boy.
The deal was finalised for Rs 2 lakh, out of which Amit paid Rs 70,000 in advance to Gurpreet and promised to hand over the remaining money later.
The baby's mother, Noori, a resident of Iqbal Nagar, had got an FIR lodged against her father Feroze Khan and others on April 15 at the Basti Jodhewal police station, accusing them of abducting and selling her child.
The police had also conducted a DNA test on Noori and her child to strengthen the case in court. The test report is awaited.
