The Mohali police have seized diamond jewellery worth nearly Rs 5 crore from a Mumbai resident at Chandigarh International Airport.

Manish Bandi, a resident of upscale Mumbai locality Santa Cruz, had landed here on Indigo’s afternoon flight from Delhi on Saturday.

One box contained 74 diamond rings, another had 54 items including 24 necklaces and pairs of earrings and the third had 21 items, including jewellery sets.

Inspector HS Bal, airport police station house officer, said Bandi was apprehended inside the airport on a tip-off. Ba said he was travelling from Hyderabad via Delhi and was carrying three boxes of jewellery.

One box contained 74 diamond rings, another had 54 items including 24 necklaces and pairs of earrings and the third had 21 items, including jewellery sets.

“During questioning, Bandi claimed he was in jewellery business and was carrying the boxes for display at a lifestyle exhibition in Chandigarh,” said Bal. “When checked, there was no such exhibition here. Bandi could not even produce any document to show that he owned the jewellery.”

Bal said the interrogation continued till Saturday night and later the matter was handed over to the excise and taxation department, which seized the jewellery on Sunday and asked the accused to produce relevant documents to reclaim it.

"The income tax department too begun its probe on his business dealings,” said Bal, adding that it was strange how the man was able to pass throught frisking at Hyderabad and Delhi airports.

It was only last week when the local police seized Rs 22 lakh from a Gurgaon resident, who was unable to give a satisfactory reply after the seizure.
