The engineers, under the banner of Diploma Engineers' Association, rued that the department's senior officials and the police failed to ensure their safety, especially while performing field duty.

Union's additional general secretary Rajinderpal Sharma said that on August 18 one of their colleagues was attacked when he tried to stop farmers drawing water from the distributaries in Ghuram.

"When the employee complained to the police, they failed to register an FIR in the case. Moreover, our demand for security during field duty has not been acknowledged for many years now," he said.

Following the attack, the employees decided not to perform field duties unless given proper security cover.
