Relatives of 16-year-old Kulraj, a Class-10 student of Gems Cambridge International School and son of patwari (revenue official) Vishal Bedi, who committed suicide on Sunday, after being allegedly harassed and beaten up by some of his schoolmates, sat on a dharna on Monday and refused to cremate the body till the accused were arrested.
Accompanied by representatives of various political parties and Revenue Patwar Union, they first held a rally in front of the city police station at Clock Tower Chowk and then at Parbhat Chowk. The police asked for some time to execute arrests but the protesters refused to budge. They alleged that action was being delayed deliberately as all the accused belonged to influential families.
Last evening, a case was registered against six students Nishant Kumar, Akshay Vashisht, Harsimran Walia, Rishabh Arora, Sumit Narula and Naved under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of IPC in the city police station. Their names were written in a notebook by the deceased.
After the postmortem by a board of doctors, the body was kept in a freezer in the civil hospital. SP (detective) Jagmohan Singh and sub-divisional magistrate Jagwinderjit Singh Grewal arrived to pacify the protesters but the dharna was on till the filing of the report.
