Wheat farmers will not be allowed to harvest wheat from 7pm to 7am from April 1 onwards. This has been conveyed by deputy commissioner (DC) Pradeep Aggarwal as per Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC ).
The DC said the decision has been taken for the benefit of farmers (HT Representative Image)
He said the decision has been taken for the benefit of farmers.
“During night hours, dew on the crop gets settled and if they harvest under this condition, it can directly affect yield of the crop as moisture reaches the grains when disturbed at that time. So, it is an appeal to all the farmers to avoid any harvest from 7pm to 7am,” said Aggarwal.
He said, “Besides, if all farmers begin harvesting during night, huge pressure and panic can build up in the mandis as post harvest, everyone begins bringing the produce directly to the mandis and it is not easy for officials present there to handle everyone’s produce all of a sudden. Then there are issues created by farmers who generally complain that they are made to wait. So there is a need to understand the benefit of this decision. Moreover, it is safer to work during the day.”
Sukhpal Singh Sekhon, former district agricultural officer, said: “It’s a good decision taken by the DC and all farmers should take it seriously.”
