The police have claimed to solve the murder case of rickshaw-puller Charanjit Singh, alias Bubby, of Ambedkar Nagar with the arrest of Atar Singh and his son Kuldeep Singh of Ambedkar Nagar.
However, two of the accused, Amandeep Singh and Deepu, friends of Kuldeep Singh, are still absconding. The police have been conducting raids to arrest them.
According to the police, the accused had murdered the rickshaw-puller as they had an old grudge against him. The rickshaw-puller had insulted Atar Singh publicly.
Addressing a press conference here, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Gurpreet Singh Toor said Charanjit Singh was found murdered on August 27 under the rail overbridge near the rail lines.
The accused had murdered him with sharp-edged weapons and fled away with his rickshaw. The division no. 5 police had registered a case of murder against unidentified accused.
According to the DCP, the police suspected that the murder was executed due to personal rivalry. Area residents told the police that the victim had entered into a scuffle with Atar Singh a few days before the murder.
Therefore, the police arrested the father and son and interrogated them, during which they confessed to have committed the crime.
Atar Singh told the police that Charnanjit's nephew Vicky had stolen his mobile phone. When he told Charanjit about it, he abused him and insulted him publicly and also thrashed him.
"To take revenge from Charanjit, Atar Singh and his son Kuldeep Singh brewed a conspiracy and also involved Amandeep and Deepu. On August 26, Atar Singh and Kuldeep Singh hired his rickshaw for the bus stand. Amandeep and Deepu followed them on a bicycle. As they reached the bus stand rail overbridge, the accused assaulted him with sharp-edged weapon," said the DCP.
To distract the police investigation, the accused had stolen his cycle rickshaw and fled. The police had recovered the sharp-edged weapon from the spot. The rickshaw is yet to be recovered," he added.
