Feeling ignored by the state and centre government on the issue of their long pending demands, mid day meal cooks under banner of the Democratic Mid Day meal Cook Front has decided to exercise right to reject options on electronic voting machines during the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The cooks' front has also decided to hold statewide protest on February 16 at SAS Nagar.
General secretary of the front Mandeep Kaur said not only this, the cooks working in different government schools across the state would also exhort parents of children presently studying in the schools to exercise right to reject option.
Presently, around 40,000 cooks are working in the government schools in the district.
"What is the use of casting vote when elected representatives failed to take our demands to logical conclusion? It's better to reject candidates of all political parties and to launch massive protest against the government authorities", she said.
She added that they only wanted an increase in their salaries with the government only paying Rs 1200 that too for only 10 months.
"The mid day meal cooks in Punjab are being paid only Rs 1200 per month, whereas their peers in Haryana are being paid Rs 2500 per month", he said.
The cooks are also demanding hike in their pay-scales as per pay norms of skilled workers, regularisation in their jobs, life insurance of minimum Rs 2 lakh, inflation allowance, proper facilities in the kitchen and medical allowance in case any incident happens during the working hours.
