Power punch Carries legacy of father Balram Jakhar; is 3-time MLA

What next Considered strong contender from the seat

How he performed

Jakhar remained accessible to the people of his constituency in his third consecutive term, and a foremost leader of the party, even heading the Congress legislature party (CLP) until recently. He successfully filed a petition for a sewage treatment plant to contain flow of drains into fields, and another for fire brigade facility. The town got two fire brigades after the PIL filed by his team, with the plea that Abohar is a hub of cotton stocks, thus vulnerable to fire. Women in his segment got 1,000 sewing machines and 400 otherw got funding for beauty parlours under a central self-employment scheme for urban areas, HE SAYS. The town also got a steel bridge for two-wheelers over railway tracks. However, civic amenities did not see any big improvement despite his goodwill across party lines.

Voter speak

It is due to our MLA that the voice of the people has reached the government. Jakhar is a tall leader who is also countering criminalisation of politics with his wisdom.

Sandeep Chaudhary, 43, agriculturist

No doubt that development took place in the town, but much more could have been done in rural areas. Villages still lack waterworks, and landless peasants need proper employment.

Jashandeep Singh, 35, agriculturist

What next Is strong contender for ticket again

How he performed

In this term, Dhillon raised his voice in the Vidhan Sabha for construction of an 8-acre Shaheed Bhagat Singh Park in place of the zila parishad complex. He claims credit for construction of various link roads in the constituency too. He raised the issue of completion and cleaning of Harigarh-Badbar link drain to avoid crop destruction in the rainy season. He got funds released through Rajya Sabha MP Ambika Soni for construction of basketball playgrounds in government schools in two villages. People usually complain of his absence from the area, but he is quite active on social media, and enjoys the reputation of being warm and friendly. But, being an opposition MLA, he could not fetch any big projects for Barnala.

Voter speak

Though he is articulate and quick-witted, being in the opposition he could not do much for the area in terms of getting any projects or even basic development.

Rajinder Kumar, 45, businessman

The roads are full of potholes, and people are suffering due to apathy of the government. Our MLA never visited the affected places or the people.

Rajiv Barnala, 44, social activist
